Is Blogging a Waste of Time?

It can be, for sure.

The fact is, if you want to create a successful blog, gain lots of traffic, and have the potential to make money, then blogging requires a lot of work.

If you're not ready for that, if you're not willing to keep going when there is zero evidence that you're growing, then it's not worth starting. You will, at some point, get discouraged and throw in the towel.

You'll do what 99% of the blogging population does.

In which case, it's definitely a waste of time - not to mention a waste of money and mental strain. Why even put in the work if you're not willing to wait to see if it bears fruit? To my way of thinking, once you decide to start a blog, once you start actually writing, you're committed.

You're committed for at least a year to see if you can make a go of it. If you're not ready to stick it out for that long, then you will waste your time. You'll waste weeks if not months of work with nothing to show for it.

It's important to mention that just because you hang in there for a year - or preferably two - doesn't guarantee that you're going to succeed. That's the minimum before you should start seeing signs that people like what you offer.

There are success stories of people starting blogs and doing really well after only six months, but this is an extreme exception. In my case, although I did make a few thousand dollars my first year, it took me five years before I was able to replace my teacher's salary.

I hope I'm not discouraging you.

I just want to make sure you know the truth so you can make the best decision for you. This blog, Renegade Blogger, is now four weeks old and I've had just a handful of visitors (from Facebook) and no search engine traffic.

The only reason why I'm not discouraged and won't be if it's the same a month from now is because I expect it to be this way. In fact, because I'm in a very competitive niche, I'm unlikely to get much traffic for the first nine months or more.

But I'm in it for the long haul. I accept that it's going to be tough sledding for a long, long time. That's okay. It's part of the deal. Should you decide to start a blog, I hope you adopt the same attitude.

After all, our refusal to give up is our greatest advantage and the only guarantee in this amazing, challenging, and sometimes life-changing endeavor.
