Can You Really Make Money Blogging?

If you do a quick Google search, you'll find a wide range of answers to this question. Some say it depends on your niche. Some say only if there is a solid business behind your blog. And others, jadedly, say only if you're teaching people how to make money.

I know for a fact that the latter two are wrong.

I make a good living blogging about education and have for many years. As for your niche, what you choose is important to a degree. If there aren't many people interested in your topic, then you'll never get enough traffic to make any real money.

However, and contrary to what the "experts" will tell you, I don't think you should shy away from competition. Every industry needs disruptors. Society, in general, is looking for fresh voices, rebels, and limit-pushers. If you have a passion - even if it's in a huge niche like the NFL or politics - I say go for it.

Have some chutzpah.

The key to your success, and the key to making money, is to keep at it. Keep writing week after week until you become so good they can't ignore you. If you help people, if you solve problems and provide solutions, or you inspire people, you'll rise to the top.

As long as you don't quit, you'll get there. It's one of the greatest things about blogging. No one can stop you. There are no gate-keepers. No one you have to bribe or kiss their rear-end. Just keep climbing month after month.

Don't shy away. Write honestly and from the heart.

So that topic you really want to blog about? The one that scares you to death? The one you think may be just too big?

That's the one you should choose. That's the one that's going to keep you going when your motivation lags. That's the one that will free you to write with enough passion and originality to grow an audience - along with your bank account.
